Dimitris Kyritsis serves as Assistant Professor of Byzantine History at the Department of History and Archaeology within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Crete, where he has taught since 2002.
His academic foundation includes studies at:
- University of Athens
- Sorbonne (Paris-I)
- Harvard University (doctoral thesis on 13th-14th century Byzantine aristocracy)
Research initially centered on late Byzantine social/economic structures and aristocracy, later expanding to agricultural economies of Byzantine Asia Minor villages, state land ownership, and production organization under large estates. Current work investigates institutional history through justice systems post-12th century and Byzantine collective decision-making mechanisms, examining councils/assemblies across imperial history.
His research on Byzantine political assemblies has produced two publications and multiple conference presentations, with a monograph in preparation exploring Byzantium's role in medieval European political evolution.
He contributes to the diplomatic edition of the Monastery of Zografou's Byzantine archive within the 'Archives de l'Athos' series.
