Dr Dimitrinka Atanasova is a Senior Lecturer in Intercultural Communication at Lancaster University's Department of Linguistics and English Language, within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Her research focuses on the role of culture in communication across health, science, and education contexts, employing methods from applied linguistics and media studies. She coordinates the cross-disciplinary Culture and Communication Research Network (CULCOM) and has held roles at Queen Mary University of London, University of Sheffield, and University of Leicester. Current administrative responsibilities include Director of Studies for undergraduate years 2-3 and multiple MA programs.
Teaching responsibilities include convening courses on intercultural communication, corpus-based discourse analysis, and language/media studies at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Her external engagements include membership in AMEC’s Academics & Educators SIG, founding the BAAL Health & Science Communication SIG, and serving as a UK Research Councils’ peer reviewer. Key research areas encompass climate change communication, obesity discourse analysis, and metaphor framing in cross-cultural contexts.
Recent projects include studies on constructive news reporting, nitrogen pollution discourse, and sustainability narratives. She actively advises on public health communication strategies through consultancy work with private, public, and third-sector clients. Her work bridges applied linguistics with societal challenges, emphasizing culturally sensitive communication practices in education and environmental advocacy.
