Dimitri Kullmann is a Professor of Neurology at the UCL Institute of Neurology, University College London. He holds prestigious fellowships including the Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator and Fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians, Academy of Medical Sciences, and Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine. His research spans synaptic transmission, channelopathies, and gene therapy for neurological disorders.
- Education: BA in Physiological Sciences (Oxford, 1979), DPhil (Oxford, 1984), MB BS in Medicine (London, 1986)
His research focuses on synaptic neurology, including mechanisms of inherited and autoimmune channelopathies, calcium-exocytosis coupling in excitatory boutons, and gene therapy applications for experimental epilepsy. He has pioneered studies on neural population oscillations and their role in information routing within the central nervous system.
His recent publications highlight work on ion channel disorders (e.g., Kv1.1 mutations), seizure suppression via gene therapy, and neural oscillation dynamics. These span disciplines such as neuroscience, neurology, and computational modeling, with subfields including synaptic plasticity, neurogenetics, and neuroimmunology.
- Martin Wronker Prize (Oxford, 1979)
- Prize Fellow, Magdalen College Oxford (1982)
- University Gold Medal (London, 1986)
- ERC Advanced Investigator (2009-2014)
- Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator (2011-present)
He currently leads Wellcome Trust and MRC-funded projects on synaptopathies and gene therapy for refractory epilepsy. As Editor-in-Chief of 'Brain' since 2014, he contributes to advancing neurological research globally.
