Dimitri Bertsekas is the Fulton Professor of Computational Decision Making at the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence, Arizona State University (ASU), where he has been a full-time faculty member since 2019. Previously, he held the position of McAfee Professor of Engineering at MIT (1979–2019). He is renowned for his contributions to optimization, control theory, and artificial intelligence.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (Greece).
- MS in Electrical Engineering from George Washington University (1969).
- PhD in System Science from MIT (1971).
Research Interests: Bertsekas' work bridges theory and application in optimization, control systems, and reinforcement learning. His research emphasizes large-scale computational methods, dynamic programming, and stochastic systems, with significant impacts on machine learning and AI.
Publications & Awards: He has authored over 20 books and numerous papers, including seminal works like Neuro-Dynamic Programming and Dynamic Programming and Optimal Control. His accolades include the INFORMS John von Neumann Theory Prize (2018), the IEEE Control Systems Award (2022), and membership in the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.
Affiliations: Bertsekas founded Athena Scientific (1995), a publisher of technical books, and serves as Chief Scientific Advisor at Bayforest Technologies (London). He has advised numerous students and held editorial roles for scientific journals.
