Dimitra Vernardou

Dimitra Vernardou serves as an Assistant Professor at Hellenic Mediterranean University, specializing in functional metal oxide coatings for energy and environmental applications. Her expertise centers on chemical vapor deposition techniques and electrochemical characterization of advanced materials.

She earned her Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Salford (2005), followed by postdoctoral research at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL-FORTH). In 2006, she joined the Centre of Materials Technology and Photonics (CEMATEP) at the Technological Educational Institute of Crete, where she designed and optimized atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) systems for metal oxide synthesis.

Her research focuses on:

• Growth and doping of vanadium dioxide (VO₂) and tungsten oxide (WO₃) for smart window technologies
• Electrode development for lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors
• Structural, optical, and morphological analysis of thin-film coatings
• Electrochemical mechanisms via cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy

With over 80 peer-reviewed publications and an h-index of 34 (Google Scholar), her work demonstrates significant impact in sustainable energy materials. She has supervised 39 undergraduate theses, four Master's theses (as supervisor/co-supervisor), and two doctoral dissertations in energy-related fields.

Dr. Vernardou has served as principal investigator for three completed research projects focused on metal oxide applications for energy storage and environmental solutions. Her laboratory maintains specialized APCVD infrastructure for synthesizing doped and undoped transition metal oxides, with ongoing investigations into electrode-electrolyte interfaces for next-generation energy devices.
