Professor Petrakaki's research focuses on the relationship between technology and power in organizational contexts, with particular emphasis on healthcare settings. She investigates how digital technologies shape work organization, professional identity, and power dynamics across various contexts. Her work spans from examining electronic governing in public sector modernization to studying digital health platforms in the Global South and AI applications in clinical work and job interviews. A distinctive aspect of her recent research is the critical analysis of 'digital epistemic coloniality' - how digital health platforms may colonize health knowledge and work while marginalizing local contexts and expertise in developing countries.
Her publication record demonstrates consistent high-impact contributions to the field, with recent work appearing in leading journals such as Information Systems Journal, Journal of Management Studies, and Social Science & Medicine. Her research has attracted significant funding from ESRC, UKRI, the British Academy, and the Wellcome Trust, supporting projects that examine digital health platforms, platform work in creative industries, and sustainable healthcare practices.
Professor Petrakaki has received professional recognition through her editorial appointments and has served as External Examiner for multiple institutions including Lancaster University, University of Warwick, Royal Holloway University of London, and University of Sheffield. She is also an active member of the Board of the UK Association for Information Systems (UKAIS).
As an educator, Professor Petrakaki convenes undergraduate and postgraduate courses including 'Information Systems' and 'Research Project (Management)', and leads doctoral training workshops for Management, Accounting and Finance students. She is interested in supervising PhD students on topics related to digital health activism, platform work, health technology in developing countries, and AI applications in clinical work.
