His research focuses on ancient Roman visual culture, particularly the contextual significances of replicas of the Knidian Aphrodite in the Roman world, and critiques modern typologies linked to pseudo-race science and eugenics. He also explores collecting ethics, museum practices, and digital humanities.
Dillon has conducted fieldwork at Etruscan and Roman sites in Italy, including Poggio Civitate and Cosa. His research on the de Clercq-Boisgelin collection at the Louvre was supported by The Europe Center at Stanford, where he documented Roman bronze statuettes and archival correspondence.
