Dilek Dizdar serves as Professor of Translation Studies and Intercultural German Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, concurrently holding the position of Dean for the Faculty of Translation Studies, Linguistics and Cultural Studies. She directs the Centre for Intercultural Studies (ZIS) research platform at the University of Mainz, establishing her leadership in interdisciplinary academic frameworks.
Her educational foundation includes translation, interpreting, and theoretical linguistics studies at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, culminating in a doctorate from Ruprecht Karls University of Heidelberg in 2006. This background anchors her expertise in linguistic and cultural mediation.
Research focuses on translation theory, deconstruction, politics of translation, and migration contexts, with significant contributions to understanding translation's role in arts and humanities. Current work examines how language assumptions categorize speakers in forced migration scenarios through DFG-funded transdisciplinary research.
As principal investigator for the Collaborate Research Center "Studies on Human Categorization" (DFG SFB 1288), she secures major research funding while directing the Centre for Intercultural Studies. Her CETRA summer school tutorials demonstrate expertise in epistemological frameworks, functional approaches, and sociological dimensions of translation.
Academic leadership spans research platform direction, faculty deanship, and transdisciplinary project coordination, emphasizing translation's critical function in societal categorization systems and cultural discourse.
