Dietrich Leibfried is a Lecturer and Staff Researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), working in the Department of Physics. His primary affiliation is with NIST's Ion Storage Group, where he co-leads efforts in quantum information processing, quantum networking, and trapped ion technologies. Leibfried holds a Diplom-Physiker (1991) and a Dr. rerum naturarum in physics (1995) from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany, and a Habilitation (2005) from Ludwig-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck, Austria.
His research focuses on quantum information science, with expertise in trapped ion systems, quantum control, and precision spectroscopy. Key contributions include foundational work on quantum computing architectures using trapped ions and advancements in quantum networking protocols.
Leibfried has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the APS Fellowship (2006) and the Humboldt Professor Grant (2010).
