Dieter Verhaest is a full Professor at the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), KU Leuven. His research focuses on Labour Economics and Economics of Education, with a particular emphasis on skill mismatches, labor market outcomes, vocational training, and the interplay between education and employment. He actively participates in institutional governance as a member of the Council of the FEB and the Campus Council for the Brussels Campus. Verhaest leads multiple research projects, including dynamic modeling of skills and education impacts, and the labor market prospects of Ukrainian refugees.
His publications explore topics such as internships, overeducation, wage differentials, and the effects of work-based learning. Verhaest contributes to policy discussions on dual learning systems and labor market integration in Flanders. Collaborations with researchers like Stijn Baert and Ineke Tobback highlight his interdisciplinary approach. Current projects include "Educational credentials and initial job mismatch" (2025–2028) and a sabbatical on "General skills, specific skills and labor market outcomes" (2022–2024).
