Dieter Söll is a Sterling Professor Emeritus and Research Professor in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University, also holding an Emeritus title in Chemistry. He received his PhD in Chemistry from the Technische Hochschule Stuttgart (1962) and conducted postdoctoral research under H.G. Khorana at the University of Wisconsin, contributing to the elucidation of the genetic code. Since 1967, he has led a research group at Yale, mentoring over 250 trainees. His work focuses on transfer RNA (tRNA), aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases, and the genetic code, with groundbreaking contributions to selenocysteine and pyrrolysine research. Söll co-founded Nucleic Acids Research and pioneered educational initiatives like a summer program for underrepresented students. He is a member of prestigious academies and has been honored with awards such as the Humboldt Research Award and Guggenheim Fellowship.
Research interests span genetics, molecular biology, and synthetic biology, emphasizing tRNA's role in protein biosynthesis and genetic code expansion. Recent studies explore selenocysteine's therapeutic applications and archaeal genetic innovations. His legacy includes over 665 papers and foundational contributions to understanding life's molecular machinery.
- Awards: Sterling Professorship (2006), US National Academy of Sciences membership, honorary doctorate from Uppsala University.
- Education Initiatives: Creator of a model summer research program, recipient of Bouchet Leadership Award for mentoring.
- Labs/Teams: Dynamic research lab at Yale focused on tRNA synthetases and genetic code engineering.
