Diego Huet is an Assistant Professor in the Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences Department at the University of Georgia's College of Pharmacy. His research focuses on understanding the unique metabolic adaptations of apicomplexan parasites, including Toxoplasma gondii, Plasmodium, and Cryptosporidium. His lab investigates organelle function, inter-organellar communication, and the role of the ATP synthase in these parasites. The Huet Lab uses genetic, biochemical, and proteomic approaches to uncover vulnerabilities for therapeutic interventions.
Research Themes:
- Apicomplexan mitochondrial and apicoplast biology
- Membrane contact sites and organelle interactions
- ATP synthase structure and regulation
- CRISPR-based functional genomics
Lab Affiliations: The lab is part of the Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences and affiliated with the Cell Biology Department. It collaborates with the Center for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases (CTEGD).
Advising: Current students include PhD candidates Kaelynn Parker and Samuel Nyarko, with recent alumni Madelaine Usey (PhD 2024) and Christofer Kershbael Zepeda (PhD candidate). Undergraduate researchers include Seth Laney and Aneesh Mirakjar.
Lab Location: Paul D. Coverdell Center, Room 345A (office), 376 (lab).
