Diede Maas is a Lecturer at the Marine Animal Ecology (MAE) department within Wageningen University. She serves as the education contact person for students seeking research projects and is actively involved in curriculum development, including designing a theoretical Scientific Diving course and contributing to multiple courses in the Bachelor of Marine Sciences program. Her academic career began at Wageningen University, where she studied Marine Biology, focusing on Portuguese man o' war morphology, flatworm effects on corals, and mussel morphology in Indonesian marine lakes. She continued this work during her PhD, becoming the first MAE group PhD candidate in 2015, studying population genetics and morphology using mussels and jellyfish in marine lakes. Post-PhD, she joined MAE as permanent staff.
Her expertise spans animal ecology, aquatic ecology, and population genetics, with a focus on marine systems. She emphasizes data analysis and visualization to engage both academic and public audiences. Diede is also involved in advancing marine conservation strategies through research on genetic diversity and protected areas. Her office is located at Radix Oostvleugel (E0.232) in Wageningen, and she is available for consultations throughout the week.
