He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from New York University (2012). His research examines how historical factors, such as early access to external finance and colonial-era institutions, influence modern fiscal systems and state-building processes.
His seminal work, Pawned States: State Building in the Era of International Finance (2022), explores the long-term consequences of international debt on state capacity and governance. This book has been honored with multiple prestigious awards, including the 2023 William H. Riker Book Award and the Gaddis Smith International Book Prize.
Queralt’s research spans comparative politics, international relations, and political economy. His articles, published in top journals like the American Journal of Political Science and International Organization, analyze topics such as fiscal innovation in non-democratic regimes, the impact of political representation on tax reforms in China, and historical church-state conflicts.
He is a core member of the Yale-UB HPE Workshop, focusing on historical political economy. His current projects include studying the effects of foreign aid on state capacity during and after colonial rule. Office hours are held Thursdays 4:00–6:00 PM via Calendly.
