Julia Adams

Julia Adams is the Margaret H. Marshall Professor of Sociology at Yale University, specializing in comparative and historical sociology, political theory, and gender studies. She co-directs YaleCHESS (Center for Historical Enquiry and the Social Sciences) and has held administrative roles including Department Chair, Provost’s Office advisor, and Head of Grace Hopper College. Her research focuses on patrimonial politics, agency in modernity, and digital knowledge representation, particularly on Wikipedia. She has authored influential works such as The Familial State (2005) and edited volumes on patrimonial capitalism and empire.

Adams holds a degree from Reed College and has held leadership roles across Yale’s academic and administrative structures. Her NSF-funded research with Hannah Brückner examines Wikipedia’s representation of academia, addressing gender and racial disparities in knowledge curation. Awards include the Gaddis Smith Book Prize and the Barrington Moore Jr. Award for scholarly contributions to comparative sociology.

Her academic interests integrate historical analysis with contemporary sociological theory, bridging early modern European politics, colonialism, and modern digital knowledge systems.
