J. Richard Bond is a University Professor at the University of Toronto and a leading figure in cosmology at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA). He serves as Director of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) Cosmology & Gravity Program. His research focuses on the physics of the early universe, cosmic structure formation, cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, and the dark matter/dark energy problem. Bond earned his Ph.D. in 1979 from Caltech and holds honorary doctorates and fellowships from prestigious institutions worldwide.
Research interests include CMB anisotropies, gravitational lensing, and theoretical frameworks linking particle physics to cosmological observations. His work with experiments like Boomerang, Planck, and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) has revolutionized understanding of cosmic structure and dark energy. Awards include Officer of the Order of Canada, Fellowship in the Royal Society, and membership in the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
Major contributions include pioneering studies of CMB polarization, detection of acoustic peaks in CMB data, and insights into dark matter distribution via galaxy cluster surveys. Collaborative efforts with ACT and DESI projects continue to explore cosmic evolution and baryonic feedback mechanisms.
