Dr. Diarmuid Torney is an Associate Professor in Politics at the School of Law and Government, Dublin City University (DCU). He holds an MPhil and DPhil (PhD) in International Relations from the University of Oxford. His research focuses on climate change politics, policy, and governance at national, European, and global levels, with a particular interest in transformative climate action frameworks, deliberative democracy, and climate legislation. He co-directs the DCU Centre for Climate and Society and contributed to Ireland’s first Climate Change Assessment for the Environmental Protection Agency.
Dr. Torney chairs DCU’s MSc in Climate Change: Policy, Media and Society and advises on climate policy through roles such as National Economic and Social Council member, Executive Group of the All-Island Climate and Biodiversity Research Network, and the Royal Irish Academy’s Net Zero Working Group. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, notably through the Audacious Partnerships Process for city-university sustainability collaborations.
His research explores governance innovations like climate assemblies, energy governance in Ireland, and EU climate leadership. He advocates for stronger procedural climate governance frameworks and the integration of social science insights into climate action.
Dr. Torney’s publications highlight challenges and opportunities in EU climate policy, global climate diplomacy, and the role of deliberative democracy in climate transitions. He is a Research Fellow of the Earth System Governance Project, emphasizing transnational governance and policy networks.
