Diane McClure

Dr. Diane McClure is an Associate Professor of Laboratory Animal Medicine at the Western University of Health Sciences (since 2009) within the College of Veterinary Medicine. She holds dual degrees: a DVM in Zoological Medicine and a PhD in Physiology from the University of California, Davis (1990 and 1988, respectively), and is a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (1995). Her professional roles include adjunct professorships at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and consulting veterinarian positions at institutions like Stanford University Medical Center and UCSB's Animal Resource Center.

Her academic interests focus on comparative cardiovascular physiology, surgical critical care, and welfare of captive animals. She has expertise in biosecurity, disaster preparedness, and small mammal/wildlife medicine. Key publications include works on rodent clinical pathology, euthanasia protocols for Xenopus laevis, and mycobacteriosis in rabbits/rodents. She has held leadership roles in animal facility management, including directing UCSB's Animal Resource Center (1998–2005) and overseeing construction of multimillion-dollar research facilities at Ohio State University.

Dr. McClure is actively involved in professional organizations such as the American Physiological Society, American Veterinary Medical Association, and Association of Zoo Veterinarians. Her teaching spans laboratory animal medicine to exotic pet care, emphasizing adult learning strategies and humane veterinary practices. She has contributed to major resources like The Merck Veterinary Manual and pioneered euthanasia guidelines for non-domestic species.
