Diane Mackie is a Professor in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she has been a faculty member since 1984 following her PhD completion at Princeton University.
Her educational background includes a BA and MA from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and additional work as a research assistant at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, prior to earning her MA and PhD in Social Psychology from Princeton in 1984.
Dr. Mackie's research program investigates social influence mechanisms and intergroup dynamics, with particular expertise in stereotyping processes and prejudice reduction. Her extensive scholarship spans theoretical frameworks for group perception and practical applications for improving intergroup relations, reflected in over 100 publications including the widely adopted textbook Social Psychology (co-authored with Eliot Smith).
She has received significant recognition for her contributions to the field:
- Western Psychological Association Outstanding Researcher Award (1992)
- Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Award from the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (1998)
- Psi Chi Distinguished Lecturer, Rocky Mountain Psychological Association (2000)

Dr. Mackie maintains active editorial leadership having served on the boards of all major social psychology journals and as Associate Editor for Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Group Processes and Intergroup Relations, and Personality and Social Psychology Review. Her service includes extensive mentorship through editorial guidance and professional society contributions.
