Professor Diane Coyle is the Bennett Professor of Public Policy and Co-Director of the Bennett Institute for Public Policy at the University of Cambridge. Her research focuses on productivity, the digital economy, economic measurement, and policy design. She leads the Bennett Institute's research under themes of progress and productivity, emphasizing how economies improve and who benefits. Key roles include membership on the UK Government’s Industrial Strategy Council, New Towns Taskforce, and advising the Competition and Markets Authority. Previously, she served as Vice Chair of the BBC Trust and on the Natural Capital Committee. In 2023, she was awarded a DBE for contributions to economics and public policy.
Her work spans books like Cogs and Monsters (2021) and Markets, State, and People (2020), addressing economic theory and policy. Ongoing projects include valuing data and natural capital, and rethinking economic measurement frameworks. Recent publications analyze UK productivity trends, AI governance, and the challenges of centralised control in public services.
Policy contributions include critiques of levelling-up strategies and the UK’s incoherent governance structures. She co-authored influential papers on digital markets, competition policy, and the impact of digital technologies on economic statistics.
