Diana Mutz is the Samuel A. Stouffer Professor of Political Science and Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, and Director of the Institute for the Study of Citizens and Politics. Her research focuses on public opinion, political psychology, mass political behavior, and political communication. She holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University and has held academic positions at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and The Ohio State University.
Her work explores topics such as media effects, deliberative democracy, and the psychological impacts of globalization. Notable books include In-Your-Face Politics (2015), Hearing the Other Side (2006), and Winners and Losers (2021). She has been recognized with prestigious awards including election to the National Academy of Sciences (2021) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2008).
Mutz pioneered the Time-sharing Experiments for the Social Sciences (TESS) initiative, earning the Warren Mitofsky Innovators Award (2007). Her research consistently bridges theory and empirical methods, emphasizing survey experimentation and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Her recent work addresses polarization, trust in institutions, and the societal implications of economic globalization.
