Diana Mitchell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Idaho, within the College of Science. Her research focuses on innate immune cell function in the central nervous system, particularly microglia in the retina of zebrafish models. She leads the Mitchell Lab, which investigates microglial dynamics during tissue development, injury, and regeneration, with implications for neurodegenerative diseases and regenerative therapies.
Education and Career: Mitchell earned her Ph.D. in Microbiology & Immunology from the University of Utah (2012), followed by postdoctoral training in Cell Biology at the University of Tennessee (2012–2014). She joined the University of Idaho as a Research Assistant Professor in Retinal Biology (2014–2017) before becoming an Associate Professor.
Research Interests: The lab explores microglia’s roles in retinal development, degeneration, and regeneration, including interactions with Müller glia and other cells. Techniques used include live microscopy, transgenesis, and next-generation sequencing. Key topics include microglial phagocytosis, inflammatory signaling, and retinal circuit rewiring.
Recent Research Trends: Publications highlight studies on microglial signaling pathways (e.g., MyD88), oxidative stress responses, and Müller glia compensation in microglial-deficient contexts. Work emphasizes zebrafish models for understanding retinal regeneration and functional recovery.
Awards and Recognition: She received the College of Science Early Career Faculty Award (2020–2021).
Labs and Collaborations: The Mitchell Lab collaborates on interdisciplinary projects, leveraging zebrafish models to advance regenerative medicine. Visit www.mitchelllabuofi.com for more details.
