Dr. Devin Brown is a Professor of English at Asbury University and a Lilly Scholar. He specializes in British literature, fantasy literature, and the works of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. He teaches courses like 'Tolkien and Human Personhood' and 'C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien' in the Honors Program. His research focuses on Christian theology in literature, fantasy narratives, and the legacy of Lewis and Tolkien. Brown holds a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina and a Master’s from the University of Florida.
He has authored over 20 books, including A Life Observed: A Spiritual Biography of C.S. Lewis and Tolkien: How an Obscure Oxford Professor Wrote The Hobbit, which won the Christian Retailing’s Best Award. His children’s novels Not Exactly Normal and Not Exactly Love have received notable recognition. Brown is also a frequent speaker at academic conferences, book festivals, and universities worldwide.
Recipient of Asbury’s highest teaching honor, the Frances White Ewbank Award, Brown has contributed to documentaries such as C.S. Lewis: Why He Matters Today and scripts like The Hound of Heaven: The Story of Francis Thompson. He actively engages in editorial roles for publishers like Oxford University Press and Crossway, and serves as a judge for Christianity Today’s Book of the Year award.
Brown’s work bridges literary analysis with Christian faith, emphasizing themes of moral growth, redemption, and the intersection of myth and spirituality. His academic contributions span scholarly articles, creative writing, and collaborative efforts with institutions like the Fellowship for Performing Arts.
