Devdas Shetty, Ph.D., P.E., is the current Dean and Distinguished Energy Chair at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, University of the District of Columbia (UDC). He holds a Professor rank in Mechanical Engineering and has led UDC since 2012. His professional journey includes leadership roles at Lawrence Technological University and the University of Hartford.
Shetty's educational background includes a Ph.D. from IIT, followed by postgraduate training at Harvard University, MIT, Stanford University, and multiple international institutions. His expertise spans mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, advanced manufacturing, and nanoscale research. He has pioneered international academic partnerships, notably with institutions in China, India, South Korea, and the Caribbean.
His research focuses on mechatronics system design, robotics, additive manufacturing, and Industry 4.0 integration. He has authored textbooks such as Product Design for Engineers and secured grants from NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Energy. His leadership extends to roles like Program Director at the National Science Foundation and Director of the MIT-UOH Collegium on Manufacturing Productivity Institute.
Shetty's recognitions include Fellowships from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Industrial Engineering, as well as the BEYA-STEM National Award and the Honorable Ronald H Brown Distinguished Leadership Award. He actively promotes engineering education through courses like Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and Robotics, while advancing initiatives in sustainable product design and rehabilitation technologies.
His grants have funded projects such as additive manufacturing post-processing and laser rapid manufacturing systems. Shetty's work bridges academia and industry through capstone projects, international collaborations, and outreach programs aimed at fostering innovation and diversity in STEM.
