Dev Mukhopadhyay, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in Jacksonville, Florida. He holds a joint appointment in the Department of Cancer Biology and leads the Tumor Angiogenesis and Vascular Biology Laboratory at Mayo Clinic. His research is closely affiliated with the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Cancer Biology Research Center, and the Translational Nanomedicine Program.
Dr. Mukhopadhyay earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in Biochemistry from Calcutta University, followed by postdoctoral training in Tumor Biology at Harvard Medical School and Microbiology/Immunology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His foundational expertise lies in angiogenesis, cancer biology, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes.
His research focuses on understanding the tumor microenvironment, particularly the role of angiogenic factors like VEGF, VEGF-C, VEGF-D, and PIGF in tumor progression and metastasis. He investigates key signaling pathways in pancreatic and renal cancers, including the role of GIPC and its PDZ domain in modulating EGFR and IGF-1R expression. His lab also explores exosome biology in renal cancer and the development of novel nanotherapeutics using gold nanoparticles and lipid-based delivery systems to overcome therapy resistance.
Analysis of his recent publications (2021–2025) reveals a strong emphasis on translational nanomedicine, targeted drug delivery in pancreatic cancer and melanoma, genomic convergence in cardiovascular disease, and the development of combinatorial therapeutic strategies. His work spans molecular oncology, vascular biology, and regenerative medicine, often employing preclinical models such as zebrafish and mice.
- Genomic analyses in pancreatic cancer
- Targeted nanoparticle delivery systems
- VEGF-independent angiogenic pathways
- Exosome-mediated signaling in RCC
- CDK7 inhibition in chemotherapy response
- Stem cell secretome for vascular repair
Dr. Mukhopadhyay has been principal or co-principal investigator on multiple NIH-funded projects, including a Career Developmental Program from the National Cancer Institute and the Mayo Clinic SPORE in Pancreatic Cancer. His current active project focuses on a tumor-targeted drug delivery nanoplatform to overcome therapy resistance in glioblastoma, funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
He leads a multidisciplinary research team actively involved in developing preclinical models, identifying new therapeutic targets, and advancing individualized medicine approaches for cancer and cardiovascular disorders. His lab collaborates extensively within Mayo Clinic and with national consortia, contributing significantly to the fields of tumor angiogenesis and translational nanomedicine.
