معرفی
Detmar Klein is a Lecturer in Modern European History at the School of History, University College Cork (UCC), Ireland, where he has been a faculty member since October 2005. He is affiliated with the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences and actively contributes to teaching, research, and public engagement in European and German history.
His educational background includes a BA (1996) and PhD (2004), both in History, from Royal Holloway, University of London. Prior to his academic career, he worked as a language teacher in German as a foreign language and taught at a boarding school in Switzerland.
Dr. Klein's research focuses on 19th and 20th-century German history, with particular emphasis on German nationalism, Franco-German relations, the history of Alsace under German annexation (1871–1918), anti-Semitism, Zionism, and the Middle East conflict. His work explores how cultural identity, religion, and nationalism intersected in contested border regions. He is currently completing a research monograph on Imperial Germany and German-annexed Alsace.
His recent scholarly output reveals a consistent focus on Alsace as a cultural and political battleground, analyzing folklore, religious symbolism, and propaganda as tools of identity formation and resistance. The articles span themes of transnational history, historiography, colonial analogies, and cultural conflict, demonstrating a deep engagement with both regional and broader European historical narratives.
