Destynie Sewell is an Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) College of Business Administration. She holds a JD from Creighton University School of Law, an MBA from UNO, and dual undergraduate degrees in Business Administration and French from UNO. A licensed attorney in Nebraska and Iowa, she previously worked as a Human Resource Manager at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs before joining UNO in 2016.
Her teaching focuses on Business Law, Business Ethics, and Emerging Technologies (including AI systems). Research interests span Civil Rights, Technology & Space Law, and FinTech Law. She actively engages in community service, emphasizing youth mentorship and inclusive leadership training through roles like Sunday school teacher and faculty advisor for Delta Sigma Pi.
Dr. Sewell has received multiple awards for service and teaching, including the 2019 College of Public Affairs Alumni Award. She participates in committees like INSPIRED (promoting diversity) and the Technology in Education Resource Committee. Professional development includes conferences on legal studies, workshops on grant writing, and training in implicit bias.
Her scholarship addresses AI ethics, labor law, and educational pedagogy. She co-authored key works on collective bargaining and truth-telling in legal education, and her recent work explores presumptions of AI malfunction and classroom engagement strategies.
Licensed to practice law in Nebraska and Iowa, she balances academic rigor with community engagement, consistently advocating for inclusive education and professional development.
