Despina Economou is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Philology of the University of Crete. She earned her PhD in Linguistics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and held a postdoctoral position at the Department of English and American Studies at Humboldt University of Berlin.

Her research focuses on the intersection of semantics, syntax, and prosody, with specializations in formal linguistics and experimental approaches to syntax and semantics. She investigates topics such as covert modality in root contexts, imperatives, and subjunctives, primarily through the lens of Greek and English language structures.
Despina leads the Direspeech project, funded by the HFRI (Hellenic Foundation for Research & Innovation), which examines how form and prosody influence the interpretation of directive speech acts in child and adult language. She has presented her work at national and international conferences and published in scientific journals, mixed volumes, and conference proceedings.
