Desmond Bourgeois is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University, affiliated with the Edison Joining Technology Center. His expertise spans welding engineering, materials science, and nondestructive evaluation (NDE), with a focus on additive manufacturing monitoring and ultrasonic probe development.
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Florida A&M University (2009)
- M.S. and Ph.D. in Welding Engineering, The Ohio State University (2014, 2015)
Dr. Bourgeois's research includes in-situ monitoring for additive manufacturing (AM), developing ultrasonic probes for high probability of detection, and novel methods for NDE. His prior industry work involved hydrogen-assisted cracking (HAC) in dissimilar metal welds (DMWs) and cathodic protection testing.
He brings extensive industrial experience from roles as Welding Engineer, Materials Specialist, and Quality Lead in the petroleum industry, specializing in steel and corrosion-resistant alloy (CRA) pipeline installations and deep-water pipeline quality assurance.
At Ohio State, Dr. Bourgeois is actively involved in the Edison Joining Technology Center, applying his technical background to academic research and development.
