Desmond A. Nunez

Desmond A. Nunez is a Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Medicine and an Active Staff member at Vancouver General Hospital (Vancouver Coastal Health). His clinical practice focuses on Otology and Neurotology within the Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery division.

His primary research investigates Age Related Hearing Loss, Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss, and Recurrent Acute Otitis Media through molecular and clinical approaches. Key methodologies include microRNA biomarker analysis, randomized controlled trials, and cellular studies of inner ear pathogenesis. Recent work explores virtual reality applications for vestibular rehabilitation and motivational interviewing techniques to improve hearing aid adoption.

Analysis of his 2022-2025 publications reveals three dominant research trajectories: (1) molecular mechanisms of hearing loss involving oxidative stress and miRNA regulation, (2) clinical innovation in otitis media management and bone conduction devices, and (3) behavioral interventions for hearing rehabilitation.
