Desiree Hernandez Ibinarriaga is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Design at Monash University's Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (MADA). She is a member of the Wominjeka Djeembana Research Lab and serves as Unit Coordinator for Indigenous Higher Degrees by Research. With over 14 years of experience in design, her work spans sustainability, social design, furniture, interior design, and Indigenous design, with a strong emphasis on collaborative practices that privilege Indigenous knowledges.

Her research focuses on decolonising and indigenising design through methodologies that recognize relationality between people and Place. She specialises in critical co-design, Indigenous design theory, biocultural diversity, and design education. Her creative and scholarly work explores ways to improve partnerships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities through values-based and collaborative design processes.
Her recent publications and projects, including Decolonising and Indigenising Design (2025) and In Lak’ech (2022), reflect a trajectory centered on Indigenous epistemologies, land-based learning, and cultural regeneration. Themes across her work include decolonial aesthetics, ethical design, community agency, and the integration of ancestral knowledge into contemporary design practice.

Dr Hernandez Ibinarriaga has led and contributed to multiple research grants and projects, including the 'Room to Breathe' initiative (AUD$112,774) focused on improving living conditions in remote First Nations communities, and international co-design workshops in Oaxaca, Mexico. She actively supervises and mentors PhD students and is committed to advancing Indigenous research leadership in higher education. She is affiliated with the Wominjeka Djeembana Research Lab, which supports Indigenous-led research and creative practice at Monash University.
