Professor Des Fagan serves as Head of Architecture at Lancaster University's Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA), where he leads the School of Architecture and shapes architectural education for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He holds significant national influence as Chair of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) National Practice and Policy group, representing over forty thousand UK architects in policy development, and as Deputy Chair of the QAA Subject Benchmark for Architecture in 2025.
Professor Fagan's research program focuses on the transformative intersection of artificial intelligence and architectural practice, with particular emphasis on sustainable design applications. His work explores how machine learning can optimize building performance while addressing critical ethical, regulatory, and educational implications for the profession. He teaches across architecture programs at Lancaster University, contributing to course development and curriculum design for accredited architecture degrees.
His research interests span multiple critical domains:
- Artificial Intelligence applications in architectural design and decision support systems
- Machine Learning for sustainable building optimization and low carbon construction
- Explainability and interpretability of AI systems in architectural contexts
- Future regulatory frameworks for architects working with AI technologies
- Parametric design and optimization software applications in architectural workflows
- Bioclimatic and kinetic facade systems for environmental performance
- Dataset bias considerations in architectural AI applications
Professor Fagan's publications demonstrate a clear trajectory toward understanding AI's practical implementation in architecture, with increasing focus on sustainability applications and professional implications. His recent work examines both technical implementations of AI in design workflows and broader strategic considerations for the profession's future.
As Chair of RIBA's National Practice and Policy group, Professor Fagan oversees the development of policy and public affairs activity to affect change in Whitehall, Westminster and beyond. His leadership extends to guiding architectural education through his role as Lead of the Working Group on AI in Architectural Education, where he coordinates with industry partners including AutoDesk, Google, and OpenAI to produce guidance for all 65 Schools of Architecture.
Professor Fagan leads the AILab research project, a UKRI-funded initiative collaborating with the Eden Project and Grimshaw Architects to apply AI in low carbon building construction. This work aims to develop sustainable procurement frameworks that could influence government policy by 2024 and change sustainability workflows across the architecture industry.
