Dr. Derrek Eberts is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at Brandon University, serving as Chair of the department. He holds a Ph.D. from York University (2001), an M.A. from the University of Saskatchewan (1995), and a B.A. (Honours) from the same institution (1993). His research focuses on tourism impacts in rural Mexico, small city downtowns, neo-artisanal production, and the Canadian brewing industry. He has contributed to studies on cultural heritage preservation in Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos, community perceptions of urban growth in Brandon, Manitoba, and the branding strategies of Canadian microbreweries.
Dr. Eberts has presented widely at academic conferences, including the Canadian Association of Geographers and international forums in Poland and Portugal. His work explores intersections between tourism, economic development, and cultural sustainability. Notable publications include analyses of tourism mega-projects in Jalisco State, Mexico, and studies on urban quality of life in Canadian small cities. He has also co-authored reports on the economic impact of local infrastructure projects and waste management challenges in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
His service roles include past-president of the Canadian Association of Geographers’ Prairie Division and treasurer of its Economic Geography Study Group. Dr. Eberts teaches courses in human geography, applied quantitative methods, and urban studies, with a field studies component in Puerto Vallarta.
