Dr. Derick Han is a Keck Professor of Biopharmaceutical Sciences and Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Pharmacology at the Keck Graduate Institute's School of Pharmacy. He joined KGI in 2013 and specializes in mitochondrial biology, particularly its role in liver physiology and pathophysiology under metabolic stress. His work spans drug-induced liver injury, signal transduction pathways, and oxidative stress mechanisms. Dr. Han holds a PhD in Molecular Pharmacology and Toxicology from USC and a B.A. in Sociology and Biochemistry from UC Berkeley.
His research focuses on mitochondrial remodeling in response to alcohol, obesity, and other metabolic challenges, as well as the molecular mechanisms of acetaminophen toxicity. He has secured grants from NIH and received awards including the USC Liver Diseases Pilot Project Award and Zumberge Innovation Award. Dr. Han has taught at USC's School of Pharmacy and served as an adjunct professor at Occidental College.
Key research themes include mitochondrial dynamics, redox signaling, and the interplay between metabolic disorders and cellular injury. His publications highlight advancements in understanding how mitochondrial adaptations influence liver function under stress. Collaborative efforts with institutions like USC's Keck School of Medicine underscore his commitment to translating basic science into clinical insights.
