Dr. Derese Kassa is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Criminal Justice & Sociology Department at Iona College. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Louisville, an MA from the University of Bath, and a BA from Addis Ababa University. His research focuses on urban development, refugee integration, state-society relations in East Africa, and electoral politics in Ethiopia. He received the Best Dissertation Award from the University of Louisville’s Department of Urban and Public Affairs in 2013.
Key publications include his 2018 book Refugee Spaces and Urban Citizenship in Nairobi: Africa’s Sanctuary City, and articles on electoral authoritarianism, African urban citizenship theory, and Ethiopia’s political reforms. His work has been presented at institutions like Yale University and the African Studies Association conferences. Dr. Kassa is affiliated with the African Studies Association and the American Political Science Association.
