Derek W. Vaillant is Professor of Communication & Media and affiliate Professor of History at the University of Michigan. His research examines the history of radio broadcasting in the US and France, sound studies, and the social history of American popular music.
Current research explores structural inequality in broadcasting systems and the Flint water crisis media coverage. Vaillant leads the Flint Water Crisis Working Group investigating journalistic representations of environmental racism and platformed news challenges.
Vaillant co-founded the Global Media and Communication Collective and serves on the Library of Congress' Radio Preservation Task Force. His scholarly contributions include analyses of transatlantic radio exchanges and progressive era music reform.
