Derek T. Anderson is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Missouri, where he directs the Mizzou INformation and Data FUsion Laboratory (MINDFUL). He is also a core faculty member at the MU Institute for Data Science & Informatics. His research focuses on explainable AI, information fusion, and machine learning applied to signal/image processing, computer vision, and remote sensing. Anderson has secured over $29 million in funding across 25 projects, including grants from the NSF and U.S. Army. He mentors undergraduate through doctoral students and serves as program co-chair for national AI conferences.
- Education: PhD, MS (University of Missouri), BS (Wichita State University)
- Technical Focus: Data/information fusion, machine learning, computational intelligence, artificial intelligence, signal/image processing, computer vision, remote sensing
Anderson’s work emphasizes simulated data generation (e.g., using Unreal Engine) to address real-world AI training limitations. He advocates for foundational AI research to ensure trustworthiness, even as generative AI transforms the field. His lab’s contributions include algorithms for AI self-explanation and collaborations on autonomous drones and geospatial analytics.
