Derek Shaw is a Lecturer in the Department of Politics at Humboldt State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Colorado, Boulder (1996). Prior to his academic roles, Shaw has worked as a fisheries observer, kayak guide, environmental consultant, and served as an elected municipal councilor in Tofino, BC. His teaching and research focus on global political economy, economic forces shaping global dynamics, and the role of international institutions in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and social justice.
Shaw has taught at the University of British Columbia (Agricultural Sciences), Simon Fraser University (Philosophy), and the University of Victoria (Environmental Studies). For four years, he instructed in the International Honors Program's 'Beyond Globalization' initiative, leading cross-cultural academic journeys across Tanzania, India, New Zealand, and Mexico. His professional experience spans academic and non-academic sectors, emphasizing interdisciplinary and applied approaches to global challenges.
