Sir Derek Plumbly is a Visiting Professor, currently serving as Chairman of the Arab British Centre. He holds extensive diplomatic experience, including roles as UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon (2012–2015), chair of the international commission overseeing Sudan’s Comprehensive Peace Agreement (2008–2011), and British ambassador to Egypt and Saudi Arabia. His career spans the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), with postings in the UN Mission in New York, Washington, and Riyadh during the Gulf War. Fluent in Arabic, he studied at Oxford (Politics, Philosophy, and Economics) and later in Lebanon and Jordan. He holds an honorary doctorate from Loughborough University.
His research focuses on divided societies through the Centre for the Study of Divided Societies, addressing ethno-national challenges globally. He has engaged in discussions on Middle Eastern diplomacy, such as a 2020 event on Egypt’s diplomatic strategies. Awards include CMG (1991) and KCMG (2000).
