Derek Everett is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of History at Colorado State University (CSU), part of the College of Liberal Arts. He specializes in Colorado and American West history with emphases on geography, politics, and preservation. Dr. Everett earned his Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas after completing a B.A. at Western State College of Colorado and an M.A. at CSU.
His research focuses on regional history, historic preservation, and labor studies. Notable works include The Colorado State Capitol: History, Politics, Preservation (2005), Creating the American West: Boundaries and Borderlands (2014, Colorado Book Awards finalist), and Colorado Day by Day (2020). Current projects explore the Colorado State Capitol's restoration and the beet sugar industry's impact in the early 20th century.
Award-winning author and public historian, Everett actively engages in academic conferences, media contributions, and public history initiatives across Colorado. His work bridges scholarly research with community education, emphasizing accessibility and historical preservation.
