Roles & Affiliations: Denton S. Ebel serves as Division Chair and Curator in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). He holds adjunct roles at Columbia University (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences) and the CUNY Graduate Center. He is faculty in AMNH's Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program.
Education: PhD in Geology (Purdue University, 1993), MS in Geology (Purdue, 1988), BA in Sociology (Harvard College, 1982).
Research Focus: Specializes in meteorite analysis to study early Solar System processes, including high-temperature thermodynamic modeling, 2D/3D mineral analysis, and volcanic processes. Leads projects like OpenSpace visualization software and the AMNH meteorite collection curation.
Outreach: Revamped the Arthur Ross Hall of Meteorites exhibit and contributes to planetary science education through teacher training programs. Active in media engagements explaining asteroid impacts, comet missions, and planetary science discoveries.
Labs/Teams: Oversees the AMNH experimental petrology lab and collaborates with institutions like Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and NASA on astromaterials research.
