Professor Dennis Ougrin is a faculty member at Queen Mary University of London, currently leading the Youth Resilience Research Unit at the Wolfson Institute of Population Health. He holds a dual role as Co-Director and Professor (Q/T), contributing to both research and academic leadership. Previously, he worked at King’s College London where he led the MSc in Child and Adolescent Mental Health and served as Chief Investigator for major studies funded by NIHR, MRC, and charities. From 2018-2020, he was editor-in-chief of the journal Child and Adolescent Mental Health.
Education: Graduated from medical school in Ukraine (1998), followed by postgraduate training in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital in the UK. His research focuses on developing evidence-based interventions for self-harm in young people, prevention of Borderline Personality Disorder, and optimizing intensive community care services in both high-income and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). He pioneered the Therapeutic Assessment model and the Supported Discharge Service framework, which were validated through the UK’s first randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluating intensive community mental health services for adolescents.
His publications emphasize rigorous clinical trial methodologies and mental health service innovations. Advising and grants involve leading major research initiatives funded by governmental and charitable organizations. He is actively involved in advancing modular psychotherapeutic approaches and investigating the biological underpinnings of self-harm behaviors. Current affiliations include Queen Mary University of London and his work with the NIHR School for Primary Care Research.
He heads the Youth Resilience Research Unit, dedicated to enhancing mental health service delivery in Ukraine and other LMICs through global health research programs.
