Professor Mueller's research and teaching focus on returning to the essential aspects of architecture, emphasizing the logical chain of decisions starting from the site that address all fundamental elements of architecture. His work centers on the interaction between buildings and their location, the relationships between humans and space, and the development of materiality from the task, location, and primary requirements. He advocates for understanding design as a holistic and integrative process that combines complex dependencies into simple solutions.
His architectural philosophy emphasizes that the truly formal is conditioned, intertwined with the task, and the most elementary expression of its solution. He believes in freeing architecture from aesthetic speculation and returning building to what it should be: pure building. His work demonstrates how contemporary buildings can achieve internal coherence, simple functionality and construction, and clear, unadorned aesthetics through thoughtful consideration of context, space, materiality, joining of materials, and structural considerations.
