Dennis McGilvray is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of Colorado, having retired from teaching in 2014 after earning his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1974. He previously served as President of the American Institute of Sri Lankan Studies.
Research specializes in Tamil and Muslim society in Sri Lanka and South India, examining matrilineal kinship, religious ritual, ethnic conflict, and transnational Sufism through extensive fieldwork.
Publications include the monograph 'Crucible of Conflict' analyzing eastern Sri Lankan society and co-edited volume 'Tsunami Recovery in Sri Lanka.' Recent works explore Sufi traditions and identity formation.
