Dennis M. Pilon is a Professor and Chair in the Department of Politics at York University, within the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. He holds a PhD in Political Science from York University (2005), an MA in History from Simon Fraser University (199?), and a BA in History/Sociology from Simon Fraser University. Additionally, he has a Diploma of Technology in Broadcasting from the BC Institute of Technology. His academic career includes roles as an Assistant Professor at the University of Victoria (2006–2011) and an Associate Professor at York University before being promoted to Full Professor in 2023.
Pilon’s research focuses on democratization, electoral reform, and Canadian/comparative politics. He has authored or co-authored books such as Wrestling with Democracy: Voting Systems as Politics in the Twentieth Century West (2013) and The Politics of Voting: Reforming Canada’s Electoral System (2007). He has also contributed to numerous academic journals and policy reports, critiquing voting systems and advocating for democratic reforms.
His work emphasizes the application of democratic values like inclusion and equity to electoral institutions, challenging myths about electoral trade-offs. He is actively involved in public discourse, media commentary, and advisory roles, including membership on Fair Vote Canada’s National Advisory Board and the editorial board of Canadian Dimension magazine.
Pilon’s research interests span voting system reform, class analysis, and the intersection of gender and electoral systems. His recent publications address topics like strategic voting’s impact, gendered politics, and the historical roots of Canadian democracy.
