Professor Dennis Higgs is a Biology faculty member at the University of Windsor's Faculty of Science, specializing in fish acoustics and environmental impacts. His research focuses on how anthropogenic noise affects aquatic life, including studies on invasive species management, marine reserve effects, and sensory ecology. He has contributed to projects like the Gen-FISH initiative and acoustic trapping methods for invasive species. Key achievements include receiving the 2015 Alumni Award for Teaching Excellence and a 2014 NSERC Synergy Award for collaborative research.
Research interests span fish behavior, bioacoustics, and ecological conservation. Notable projects include analyzing lake trout vocalizations for spawning patterns and developing acoustic tools to manage invasive species like round gobies. His work frequently integrates field studies with laboratory analyses to address real-world environmental challenges.
- Key Projects: Gen-FISH genomic toolkit, acoustic trapping systems, offshore wind energy impact studies
- Awards: Alumni Teaching Award (2015), NSERC Synergy Award (2014)
- Labs/Teams: Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER)
Professor Higgs actively engages in public outreach, such as swimming Lake Erie to raise awareness about water conservation, and mentors students in both research and academic excellence.
