Dennis Cao serves as Associate Professor of Chemistry at Macalester College, teaching organic chemistry courses since joining the faculty in Fall 2015. Based in the Olin-Rice Science Center (Room 319), he maintains an active research laboratory focused on innovative molecular design.
His educational trajectory includes:
- BS from University of California, Berkeley (2006-2009) under Dr. Yi Liu
- PhD from Northwestern University (2010-2014) with Prof. J. Fraser Stoddart
- Postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University (2014-2015) with Prof. Samuel I. Stupp
Professor Cao's research program centers on organic materials chemistry, with two interconnected pillars:
- Developing porous 2D/3D alkyne-expanded hydrocarbons via alkyne metathesis for gas adsorption and molecular encapsulation
- Synthesizing electron-deficient compounds that stabilize radical electrons for molecular electronics applications
Outside academia, Dennis enjoys international travel with his spouse (fellow chemist Leah Witus), hiking, photography, Houston Rockets fandom, and 3D printer tinkering. His personal journey spans Germany (birth), San Diego (upbringing), and Minnesota (current residence), reflecting progressively colder climates.
