Dennis C. Rasmussen is a Professor of Political Science and the Hagerty Family Fellow at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. He serves as the director of Syracuse University's Political Philosophy Program, where he has established himself as a leading scholar in political theory and the history of political thought.
Dr. Rasmussen's research focuses primarily on Enlightenment political thought, particularly the works of David Hume and Adam Smith, as well as American political founding. His scholarly interests encompass political philosophy, intellectual history, and the development of modern political thought. His work often explores the intersections between commercial society, moral philosophy, and constitutional development.
His publications reveal consistent engagement with Enlightenment thinkers and American founding figures. His most recent work examines Gouverneur Morris's role in crafting the U.S. Constitution, while previous books have explored the friendship between Hume and Smith and the disillusionment of America's founders. These works demonstrate his expertise in connecting historical political thought to contemporary political understanding.
