Dr. Deniz T. Kilincoglu is a historian of ideas and narratives affiliated with the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (Berlin) as a Researcher since 2023. His work focuses on nationalism’s psychological and cognitive impacts, particularly through analysis of educational materials. Formerly, he held positions at the University of Göttingen (Research Fellow, 2017–2021 and Researcher, 2021–2022) and was an Assistant Professor at Middle East Technical University-Northern Cyprus Campus (2012–2017). He earned his PhD in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University (2012) after completing degrees in Economics from Middle East Technical University.
His research explores how nationalism shapes individual and collective minds through education, focusing on Turkish textbooks (1980–2020) to trace ideological evolution across political regimes. Interdisciplinary approaches combine cognitive science, narratology, and sociology of emotions. Key works include *The National Mind: Emotion, Cognition, and Nationalism* (2024) and *Economics and Capitalism in the Ottoman Empire* (2015). He has published extensively on Ottoman economic thought, 19th-century identity shifts, and the role of literature in social change.
His current DFG-funded project analyzes how nationalist narratives are embedded in education systems, emphasizing emotional and cognitive dimensions. Previous studies examined Ottoman intellectual history, including translations of Western economic texts and their militaristic motivations. Kilincoglu’s work bridges historical analysis with contemporary sociopolitical dynamics, offering critical insights into nationalism’s psychological infrastructure.
