Denise Thwaites is a Senior Lecturer in Interdisciplinary Arts and Assistant Professor at the Centre for Creative & Cultural Research, University of Canberra. She specializes in contemporary cultural economies, examining technological, ecological, and affective systems through transdisciplinary research. Her roles include convening the Masters in Creative Industries and supervising PhD students exploring intersections of culture, technology, and social change.
Thwaites has taught at multiple institutions including UNSW, National Art School, and University of Wollongong. Her curatorial work spans projects for MoneyLab, Artspace Ideas Platform, This Is Not Art Festival, and others. She holds a PhD from UNSW and Université Paris 8 (2014), and has professional experience at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery and the Australia Council for the Arts.
Her research focuses on alternative heritage economies, sustainable practices, and decolonial methodologies, as seen in her 2025 edited volume Alternative Economies of Heritage. She leads projects like the Digital Commons Policy Council (2022–2025) and ACT Play Symposium (2023), emphasizing creative innovation and community impact.
Thwaites’ creative outputs include poetry, exhibitions (e.g., Harmless Fun, 2024), and performance art (Corps célestes/êtres terrestres, 2024). Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly cultural preservation and equitable practices.
